The Traveling Maine(r) and the Traveling Teacher

This was the title of my speech today to retired teachers gathered in Augusta for their annual conference. They wanted to hear about travel in Maine, but I had to start by letting them know they are appreciated. Here's my speech, with lots of travel advice.

We’re going to talk travel today, but before we get to that, I need to say this. Thank you. Thank you for all that you did for me, my children, and now my grandchildren. You may not be feeling appreciated these days, but you are appreciated. So I start by applauding you.

An off-season visit to a southern Maine coastal resort is a great value, and the stunning scenery, coastal conservation lands, beaches, and uncrowded shops and restaurants, are all there for you!

Of course, if you want to lay on the beach, July and August beckon.

Who knew that Bath is a vacation destination?

After years of driving by this thriving community, we stopped for a night at the Inn in Bath where we met others on weekend get-a-ways from Chelsea, Maine to Chicago, Illinois! And because of a storm, this turned into a 3-day visit!

Guys. Print this out for next year’s Valentine’s Day. Here’s how to do Valentine’s Day right.

You tell your wife that you’re cooking her dinner, and then surprise her with dinner at one of her favorite Italian restaurants, Gagliano’s in Augusta.

Earlier in the day, you visit the restaurant with a bag of items to be placed on your table before you arrive for dinner: a photo of your wife dining in Italy with the hills of Tuscany in the background; her favorite vase filled with some of her favorite fresh flowers; a beautifully wrapped gift of her favorite chocolates from Monica’s Chocolates in Lubec (and purchased in Hallowell at Scrummy Afters Candy Shoppe); and of course, a very nice Valentine card.

When we discovered that Chef Arturo Montes was cooking this winter at Orono’s Black Bear Inn, and presenting his first Chef’s Table dinner on New Year’s Eve, we booked our places immediately. We’d follow Montes anywhere!

We decided not to wait for Christmas to enjoy one of our mutually-given gifts – a weekend of pampering at Rockland’s Berry Manor Inn and fine dining at Primo and Café Miranda. We also picked up gifts for others (and ourselves) at Fiore Oils. Merry Christmas!
